Arsenic in marine sediments from French Mediterranean ports: Geochemical partitioning, bioavailability and ecotoxicology ArchiMer
Mamindy-pajany, Yannick; Hurel, Charlotte; Geret, Florence; Galgani, Francois; Battaglia-brunet, Fabienne; Marmier, Nicolas; Romeo, Michele.
This work investigates arsenic mobility, bioavailability and toxicity in marine port sediments using chemical sequential extraction and laboratory toxicity tests. Sediment samples were collected from two different Mediterranean ports, one highly polluted with arsenic and other inorganic and organic pollutants (Estaque port (EST)), and the other one, less polluted, with a low arsenic content (Saint Mandrier port (SM)). Arsenic distribution in the solid phase was studied using a sequential extraction procedure specifically developed for appraising arsenic mobility in sediments. Toxicity assessment was performed on sediment elutriates, solid phases and aqueous arsenic species as single substance using the embryotoxicity test on oyster larvae (Crassostrea...

Effets d'un mélange de pesticides sur les hémocytes d'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas. ArchiMer
Gagnaire, Beatrice; Geret, Florence; Haure, Joel; Martin, Jean-louis; Burgeot, Thierry; Thomas-guyon, Hélène; Renault, Tristan.
Shellfish industry is often realised in estuarine areas, subjected to pollutions due to agricultural activities. The harmful effects of pesticides on animals inhabiting these estuarine zones are poorly documented. Bivalve molluscs represent an interesting model because they are sedentary and they filter water intensively. Effects of pesticides on haemocytes functions were tested in Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas and analysed by flow cytometry. A combination of pesticide at environmental concentrations was tested in vivo. Animals used corresponded to two genetically selected populations produced in hatchery.

Genetically based resistance to summer mortality in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and its relationship with physiological, immunological characteristics and infection processes ArchiMer

Summer mortality of Pacific oysters is known in several countries. However no specific pathogen has been systematically associated with this phenomenon. A complex combination of environmental and biological parameters has been suggested as the cause and is now starting to be identified. A high genetic basis was found for survival in oysters when a first generation (G1) was tested in three sites during summer. This paper presents a synthesis on physiological characteristics of two selected groups ('R' and 'S', from families selected for resistance and susceptibility to summer mortality respectively), of the second and third generations. R and S showed improvement or reduction of survival compared with the control in both field and laboratory trials...

Metal bioaccumulation and storage forms in the shrimp, Rimicaris exoculata, from the Rainbow hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge); preliminary approach to the fluid-organism relationship ArchiMer
Geret, Florence; Riso, Ricardo; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Caprais, Jean-claude; Cosson, Richard P.
At the Rainbow hydrothermal site the concentrations of metals in the fluid are the highest observed in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal areas, and the shrimps Rimicaris exoculata were observed forming dense swarms in small depressions on the chimney walls. In order to understand the fluid-organism relationship, we investigated the relative abundance of metals in the water surrounding R. exoculata and their bioaccumulation by the shrimps. This first approach stresses a net metal enrichment around R. exoculata. Precipitation, scavenging and oxidative redissolution processes in the mixing zone are controlling the concentrations of metals. Their bioaccumulation varies according to their bioavailability in the surrounding water. Metals are abundant as...

The toxicity of composted sediments from Mediterranean ports evaluated by several bioassays ArchiMer
Mamindy-pajany, Yannick; Hamer, Bojan; Romeo, Michele; Geret, Florence; Galgani, Francois; Durmisi, Emina; Hurel, Charlotte; Marmier, Nicolas.
This work investigates the ecotoxicological evaluation of contaminated dredged sediments from French Mediterranean navy harbour (A), commercial port (B) and two composite specimens (C) and (D) coming from the mixture of A and B with other port sediments. The toxicity of elutriates from these sediments is estimated using embryo-toxicity test. Microtox (R) solid phase test, LuminoTox, phytotoxicity tests and genotoxicity test. Bioassay responses are not clearly correlated with chemical contamination in the whole sediment and vary as a function of tested organisms. The highest contaminated samples (A and C) are almost always more toxic than the less contaminated samples (B and D). Among composite sediments, the mixture effect with other sediments is not...
